De Romeinse godenpijler van Nijmegen.PANHUYSEN, TITUS A.S.M.In de Romeinse tijd was Nijmegen de belangrijkste stad in het Nederlandse rivierengebied. Rond 12 v. Chr. werd het Romeins gezag gevestigd. Tacitus maakt in zijn Historiae rond het jaar 70 al melding van ‘Oppidum Batavorum’ (Burcht van de Bataven). Na het vertrek van de Romeinse garnizoenen en het verlenen van marktrechten aan de lokale bevolking ontstond de naam Noviomagus (Nieuwmarkt), of voluit Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum (naar de familienaam van de Romeinse keizer en de oorspronkelijke bewoners). Hiervan is de naam Nijmegen afgeleid. |
