By studying coins in the contexts in which they were found, a great deal of information can be gained on how coins functioned in past societies. Coins for a legion. An analysis of the coin finds from the Augustan legionary fortress and Flavian canabae legionis at Nijmegen.

Tijdens de opgravingen van het Augusteische legerkamp en de Flavische canabae legionis in Nijmegen zijn 3541 romeinse munten gevonden. De analyse van deze munten laat zien dat de militaire bewoning in Nijmegen vroeger begint dan tot nu toe gedacht, wat grote historische consequenties heeft. Daarnaast leidde het onderzoek van de muntvondsten tot nieuwe inzichten in het gebruik en het verlies van munten in de Romeinse tijd en de rol van munten in keizerlijke propaganda.
